News Context
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has revised its wind turbine approval system, changing the name from the Revised List of Models and Manufacturers (RLMM) to the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (Wind), abbreviated as ALMM (Wind).
About RLMM 2018
○ A system designed to guarantee the quality and reliability of wind turbines set up in the nation.
● Key Features of ALMM Wind: Compulsory procurement of essential components (blades, towers, gearboxes, etc.) from authorized Indian suppliers, data localization, R&D Centers, and adherence to quality standards.
● Exemption:
○ Projects that have already been bid on or captive/open access projects within 18 months.
○ New manufacturers/models are exempt for 800 MW over 2 years to encourage innovation.
About India’s Wind Energy Sector
● India is presently positioned as the 4th largest nation globally in terms of installed wind power capacity.
● Wind energy accounts for 4.69% of the country's total electricity production.
○ The nation's wind potential is estimated at 1164 GW at a height of 150 meters above ground, according to the National Institute of Wind Energy.
○ By 2030, India aspires to meet 10% of the worldwide demand for wind energy equipment.
