News Context

The inaugural grassland bird census was conducted here utilizing the Acoustic Monitoring Technique. This took place in the Brahmaputra floodplain, located at the base of the Karbi-Anglong hills in Assam, near the Diffalu and Moradifalu rivers. The region comprises alluvial grasslands, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests, wetlands, and sandy chaurs. It is part of the CATS initiative.
 Key wildlife includes the One-Horned Rhino, which accounts for 70% of its population, as well as Tigers, Eastern swamp deer, Elephants, Hoolock gibbons, Capped langurs, and the Gangetic River Dolphin. The area boasts the third highest tiger density in India, following Karnataka's Bandipur and Uttarakhand's Corbett National Park. Additionally, it is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.
