International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics
Genesis: Founded as a non-profit research centre within the CGIAR consortium during the 1970s. CGIAR is a global research organization focused on achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Purpose: Enhance food security in semi-arid regions and provide support to smallholder farmers in drylands.
Global Footprint: Operates in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and other dryland regions worldwide.
Achievements: Received the Africa Food Prize in 2021 and developed the world's first pigeon pea hybrid.
Recent Initiative: ICRISAT, in partnership with the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), inaugurated the ICRISAT Centre of Excellence for South-South Cooperation.
