( UPSC Prelims)
News Context
A tropical cyclone is characterized by a maximum wind speed exceeding 185 kph or more than 100 knots. These cyclones are warm-core low-pressure systems with a spiral inflow at the bottom level and a spiral outflow at the top. They always form over oceans where the sea surface temperature is greater than 26°C and typically develop at latitudes greater than 5° from the equator due to the presence of the Coriolis force. Recent occurrences include Cyclone Montha in the Bay of Bengal and Typhoon Matmo in China. A recent notable event is the Super Typhoon Ragasa in the Philippines.
Different regions have specific terms for tropical cyclones:
● Hurricane in the North Atlantic, Eastern North Pacific, and South Pacific Ocean.
● Cyclone in the Indian Ocean.
● Typhoon in the Western North Pacific Ocean.
● Willy-willy in the eastern part of the Southern Indian Ocean.
