( UPSC Prelims)
News Context
The World Bank has sanctioned $250 million in funding for the Inga 3 Hydropower project. The River Basin spans across nine countries: Zambia, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and Cameroon, before it discharges into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the world's second-largest in terms of flow, following the Amazon, the second-longest river in Africa after the Nile, the deepest river globally, and it crosses the equator twice. The Congo basin contains the world's largest tropical peatland, which stores the equivalent of three years of global carbon emissions from fossil fuels.
