Five powerful earthquakes occurred offshore near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. This region is situated in the Russian Far East along the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is bordered by the Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean to the east, and the Sea of Okhotsk to the west. The Kuril Archipelago, which is a point of contention between Russia and Japan, stretches from the southern end of the Kamchatka Peninsula to the northeastern coast of Japan's Hokkaido Island.
