International Union for the Protection on New Varieties of Plants

Objective: An intergovernmental organization aimed at providing and promoting an effective system of Plant Variety Protection (PVP).
 Origin: Founded in 1961.
 Role: Awards Breeder's Rights (a form of intellectual property) to encourage the creation of new and enhanced plant varieties, contributing to agriculture and food security.
 UPOV Convention 1991: Enhances breeders' rights and allows member countries to decide whether to implement the farmer's privilege (the right to save seeds).
 India's Position: Not a member; instead, it implements its own unique law, the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority Act, 2001, which distinctively safeguards both breeder and farmer rights.
