News Context
During the 10th Anniversary celebration of UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGPs), a total of 16 new sites from 11 countries were incorporated into the Global Geoparks Network (GGN).
About GGN
GGN is a non-profit International Association created under UNESCO that sets ethical standards for Global Geoparks. Recently, significant geoparks have been incorporated into the GGN, including Kanbula in China, Mt Paektu in North Korea, and North Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.
About UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGP)
• Genesis: Launched in 2015 as a crucial element of the International Geosciences and Geoparks Programme (IGGP).
• Geoparks: These are distinct, cohesive geographical regions where landscapes of global geological importance are managed through a comprehensive approach focusing on protection, education, and sustainable development.
• Management: An entity with a legal status acknowledged under national laws.
• Reassessment Period: The UGGP designation is not indefinite; it undergoes a review every four years.
• Mandatory Networking: Joining the GGN is compulsory for UGGPs.
• Current Status: There are 229 UNESCO Global Geoparks across 50 countries, with none located in India.
